Designing for Trust: Principles We Use on Every Project
Users make trust decisions in milliseconds. The design principles we have codified after building 50+ products.
Trust is a product feature. Users decide within 50 milliseconds whether to trust an interface, and that decision affects everything: conversion, engagement, retention.
Consistency Signals Reliability
Inconsistency in spacing, typography, or interaction patterns creates subconscious unease. A design system is not a luxury — it is a trust mechanism.
Speed Is Respect
A slow interface communicates that the user's time is unimportant. Every 100ms of additional load time reduces conversions. Performance is a design decision.
Transparency Reduces Anxiety
Users are anxious about things they cannot see. Addressing this explicitly — "We will email you within 24 hours" — increases trust measurably.
